This Serapi rug was handwoven during the late 19th century.

Great quality 19th century Heriz rugs are often referred to as Serapi. This piece is finely woven for the type and features hues of , brick, coral, ivory and various soft blues that are both rich and patinated at the same time. With the absence of a strong main border the intricate deep  central medallion is a major focal point and sits in front of the composition like a shield. The shield like medallion is surrounded by crisply drawn vines with large scale leaves on a brick field. The negative space of the pelt shaped field is blanketed by ivory which brightens the overall feel. The rug is framed by a thick brick perimeter referencing the field and balancing the whole composition. 

In very good condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Edge border has been expertly rewoven. Low pile with a sturdy handle.
